The Universal Fix (Try This First!)
Before trying complex solutions, this simple restart often solves 80% of tech problems:
- Turn the device completely OFF (not just sleep mode)
- Wait 30 seconds (this clears temporary memory)
- Turn it back ON
- Test if problem is fixed
This works for phones, tablets, computers, WiFi routers, smart TVs, and almost any electronic device.
Phone & Tablet Problems
Phone Running Slow
Multiple fixes to speed up your sluggish phone.
Solution 1: Close Background Apps
iPhone:
- Swipe up from bottom and pause in middle of screen
- Swipe up on app previews to close them
- Close all apps you're not actively using
Android:
- Tap the square or three-line button (recent apps)
- Swipe away apps or tap "Close All"
Solution 2: Free Up Storage Space
When phone is almost full, it slows down dramatically.
- Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage (or Device Care on Android)
- Delete unused apps (tap app → Delete App)
- Clear Safari/Chrome cache (Settings → Safari → Clear History)
- Delete old photos and videos (back them up first!)
- Aim for at least 10% free storage
Solution 3: Update iOS/Android
- Go to Settings → General → Software Update (or System Update on Android)
- If update is available, tap "Download and Install"
- Connect to WiFi and plug in charger first
- Phone will restart and be faster after update
App Keeps Crashing
When a specific app won't stay open or closes unexpectedly.
Step 1: Force Close the App
- Swipe up from bottom (iPhone) or tap recent apps button (Android)
- Find the problematic app
- Swipe it up/away to force close
- Wait 10 seconds, then open app again
Step 2: Update the App
- Open App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android)
- Tap your profile icon in top right
- Look for app in "Updates Available" list
- Tap "Update" next to the app
Step 3: Delete and Reinstall
If updating doesn't work, fresh install usually fixes it.
- Press and hold the app icon
- Tap "Remove App" → "Delete App" (iPhone) or "Uninstall" (Android)
- Go to App Store/Play Store
- Search for app and reinstall
- Sign back into your account
Frozen or Unresponsive Screen
When phone screen won't respond to touches.
Force Restart (won't delete anything)
iPhone 8 or newer:
- Press and quickly release Volume Up button
- Press and quickly release Volume Down button
- Press and hold Side button until Apple logo appears (10-20 seconds)
iPhone 7:
- Press and hold Volume Down + Power buttons together until Apple logo appears
iPhone 6s or older:
- Press and hold Home + Power buttons until Apple logo appears
Android:
- Press and hold Power button for 10-20 seconds
- Or press Power + Volume Down together for 10 seconds
Battery Draining Too Fast
Quick fixes to extend battery life throughout the day.
- Lower screen brightness: Swipe down, drag brightness slider to 50% or lower
- Turn on Low Power Mode: Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode (adds hours of battery)
- Close background apps: Especially Facebook, Instagram, and navigation apps
- Turn off location services: Settings → Privacy → Location Services → set to "While Using" for most apps
- Disable background app refresh: Settings → General → Background App Refresh → Off
- Check battery health: Settings → Battery → Battery Health (iPhone) - if below 80%, battery may need replacement
WiFi & Internet Problems
WiFi Not Working or Very Slow
Step-by-step solutions starting with easiest fixes.
Solution 1: Restart Your Router (fixes 70% of problems)
- Unplug the power cable from back of router
- Wait 30 seconds (this is important!)
- Plug power cable back in
- Wait 2-3 minutes for all lights to turn on
- Try connecting to WiFi again
Solution 2: Forget and Reconnect to WiFi
iPhone:
- Go to Settings → WiFi
- Tap the (i) icon next to your WiFi network
- Tap "Forget This Network" → Confirm
- Tap your WiFi network name in the list
- Enter password and connect
Android:
- Go to Settings → WiFi
- Long-press your network name
- Tap "Forget network"
- Select network again and enter password
Solution 3: Move Closer to Router
- WiFi signal weakens through walls and floors
- Router should be in central, open location (not closet or basement)
- Keep router away from metal objects and microwaves
- Elevate router (on shelf, not floor)
Solution 4: Too Many Devices Connected
- Each connected device uses bandwidth
- Turn off WiFi on devices you're not using
- Streaming video uses most bandwidth - pause if doing other tasks
- Consider upgrading internet plan if regularly slow with normal use
Can't Remember WiFi Password
Option 1: Check Connected iPhone
- Go to Settings → WiFi
- Tap the (i) icon next to connected network
- Tap "Password" field
- Use Face ID/Touch ID to reveal password
Option 2: Check Router Label
- Look on bottom or back of router for sticker
- Find "Password," "Passphrase," or "Network Key"
- This is default password (only works if never changed)
Option 3: Reset Router (last resort)
- Find small reset button on router (need paperclip)
- Press and hold for 10 seconds
- Router resets to default password on label
- ⚠️ Warning: All devices will need to reconnect
Computer Problems
Computer Running Very Slow
Solution 1: Close Unnecessary Programs
Windows:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Click "More details" if needed
- Look at "CPU" and "Memory" columns
- Right-click programs using lots of resources
- Select "End task"
Mac:
- Press Command + Space, type "Activity Monitor"
- Look at "% CPU" column
- Select programs using lots of CPU
- Click X button to quit
Solution 2: Free Up Hard Drive Space
- Delete old files and programs you don't use
- Empty Recycle Bin/Trash
- Clear browser cache and downloads folder
- Move photos/videos to external hard drive or cloud
- Computer needs at least 15% free space to run well
Solution 3: Restart Computer Daily
- Many people just close laptop lid (sleep mode)
- Full restart clears memory and speeds up computer
- Restart at least once per day
- Windows: Click Start → Power → Restart
- Mac: Click Apple menu → Restart
Website Won't Load
Step 1: Check Internet Connection
- Try opening different website (like Google.com)
- If nothing loads, it's your internet connection (see WiFi section above)
- If other sites work, problem is with specific website
Step 2: Clear Browser Cache
Chrome:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Windows) or Command + Shift + Delete (Mac)
- Select "All time" from dropdown
- Check "Cached images and files"
- Click "Clear data"
Safari:
- Safari menu → Settings → Privacy
- Click "Manage Website Data"
- Click "Remove All"
Step 3: Try Different Browser
- If site loads in different browser, original browser has problem
- Update your browser to latest version
- Or temporarily use the working browser
Email Problems
Not Receiving Emails
Check 1: Look in Spam/Junk Folder
- Open your email app
- Look for "Spam," "Junk," or "Trash" folder
- If email is there, mark it "Not Spam" or "Not Junk"
- Add sender to contacts to prevent future filtering
Check 2: Verify Email Address
- Make sure you gave correct email address
- Check for typos (gmail.com not gmai.com)
- Confirm you're checking the right email account
Check 3: Mailbox Full
- If mailbox is full, new emails bounce back
- Delete old emails, especially ones with large attachments
- Empty Trash folder completely
- Gmail offers 15GB free storage
Can't Send Emails
Check Internet Connection
- Make sure you're connected to WiFi or cellular data
- Try opening a website to confirm internet works
- Email may be stuck in "Outbox" - will send when connection restored
Check Recipient Address
- Verify email address is typed correctly
- Must include @ symbol and .com (or similar)
- No spaces in email addresses
